Lady Gaga Previews Born This Way Tracks
Rolling Stone heard four new songs, which seem to draw from the past while still pushing the envelope.

Hours before reviving her long-running Monster Ball Tour in Atlantic City, New Jersey, recently, Lady Gaga gave Rolling Stone magazine a sneak peek at four songs off her upcoming Born This Way album ... and from the sound of things, she's not only pushing the boundaries, she's borrowing from some of the best in the business.
For example, E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who lends his prodigious skronk to a pair of the songs — "Edge of Glory" and "Hair" — or Nine Inch Nails, circa Trent Reznor's Broken era (on "Hair," which also apparently draws inspiration from '80s singer Pat Benatar's "We Belong" and the inspirational, all-encompassing lyrics of LG's own "Born This Way"). Another song, "Judas," which is set to be the second single off Born This Way, is described by Rolling Stone writer Matthew Perpetua as "a classic Lady Gaga pop banger," with a "thumping, house music breakdown" and a vocal hook "that borrows a bit of Rihanna's distinctive cadence."
"Edge" is "a massive power ballad with heavy club beats" that also contains "an element of cheesiness" and an "Eighties stadium rock vibe." "Scheiée" — a remix of which Gaga actually debuted last month at a fashion show in Paris — contains flavors of '90s dance hits by the likes of C&C Music Factory, Snap! and RuPaul, and a chorus that "vaguely" recalls Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger." And "Hair" features LG proudly proclaiming "I am my hair!" for reasons unknown.
On Friday, Gaga's "Born This Way" officially became the fastest-selling song in iTunes history, having blown past the million-download mark in just five days. The song is also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and sits atop the charts in 23 different countries. The video is reportedly set to premiere this week.
Gaga's Born This Way album is due May 23.

Britney Spears' Manager Explains: Why Jonas Akerlund?
'Jonas did 'Ray of Light' for Madonna, and that's when [Britney] became a fan of his,' Larry Rudolph tells MTV News of 'Hold It Against Me' director.
By Ryan J. Downey, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello

Why did Britney Spears choose Jonas Åkerlund — a director whose subject matter has included drugs, strippers and trippy violence — to shoot her "Hold it Against Me" video? The answer is simple: Madonna.
"It's a good question," Britney Spears manager Larry Rudolph told MTV News during an exclusive interview, via Skype, shortly after the video's premiere. Rudolph guided Britney's career from about 1999 to 2004 and for a brief period in 2007 before they reunited again nearly three years ago. "Jonas is someone we've always wanted to work with," Rudolph said. "She's always wanted to work with him. You know, Jonas did 'Ray of Light' for Madonna, and that's when she became a fan of his."
Åkerlund directed Lady Gaga's "Telephone" as well as several iconic and cinematic videos for heavyweights like U2, Metallica, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez and Robbie Williams. But the Swedish director's most enduring and well-known relationship is with Madonna, with whom he made "Ray of Light," "Music," "American Life" and "Celebration," among other noteworthy clips.
The director started as a musician himself in the 1980s, cutting his teeth with a stint as drummer for Bathory, the dark and primitive heavy-metal band whose influence looms over the entire black-metal scene, particularly in Scandinavia. Even AFI guitarist Jade Puget can be seen wearing a Bathory backpatch in the video for "Silver and Cold," from the band's platinum Sing the Sorrow album.
Åkerlund's first video was, unsurprisingly, also in the metal genre. It's a low-budget affair beloved for its campiness (coffins, trances, moshing in the snow) for his fellow Swedes in the band Candlemass, from their 1987 album Nightfall, which was recently inducted into Decibel magazine's Hall of Fame.
His first big commercial break was with Roxette, and from there, he became one of the most sought-after video directors working. His video for Metallica's cover of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page" is practically a mini-movie, telling the story of a down-on-her-luck stripper and single mom. His incredible visuals and dark sensibilities ripped the bubblegum right off the Cardigans and Pink.
"Spun" marked »kerlund's foray into feature films in 2002. Centered on a group of methamphetamine addicts and dealers, it garnered little commercial or critical success (it has a 36 percent critical average on Rotten Tomatoes) but is known in filmmaker circles for the fast-cutting in the edit room done to emulate the look and feel of being on speed. Reportedly, there were over 5,300 cuts.
The movie starred Jason Schwartzman, Brittany Murphy, Patrick Fugit, Mena Suvari and Mickey Rourke. Obvious nods to Åkerlund's musical background included music by Smashing Pumpkins mastermind Billy Corgan and cameos from Judas Priest's Rob Halford and Blondie's Debbie Harry.
"I didn't really care for the material and there was no money," a pre-comeback Rourke told MTV News at the movie's Hollywood premiere. "[My agent] suggested several times that I make the movie because he's very fond of Jonas Åkerlund. I looked at Jonas' reels and I really liked his commercials and his [music] videos a lot more than I liked the material."
Despite the lumps taken from critics, Åkerlund said the process of making "Spun" wasn't too different from making a music video. "It's pretty much the same thing, but it just takes a bit longer," he noted.
"Ray of Light," the video that first made Britney want to work with Åkerlund, earned five Moonmen for Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards: Video of the Year, Best Female Video, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Choreography.
What do you think of Britney's collaboration with Jonas Åkerlund? Let us know in the comments!

'The Amazing Spider-Man' Gets Title, First Photo
Film studio announces name of Spidey prequel and releases first official pic of Andrew Garfield fully suited up.

These last few weeks of movie news have been big ones for comic book fans. The highly anticipated "X-Men: First Class" trailer debuted on Thursday and, kicking things off this week, a new image and the official title for the Spider-Man reboot have been revealed.
Columbia Pictures announced on Monday (February 14) that the flick would be titled "The Amazing Spider-Man" and simultaneously released a photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, the first official shot of Garfield in the full-on suit.
In the months leading up to these big Spider-Man reveals, we've seen various photos from the set, including Garfield in the suit sans mask. Even former onscreen Spidey Tobey Maguire weighed in, giving his stamp of approval after seeing an image of the new getup.
"I thought it looked cool," Maguire told MTV News at Sundance last month. "I mean, I think they did a great job with the design of it, and I'm excited to see it in action."
Garfield told us awhile back that Maguire has been especially gracious about the "Social Network" star taking over the role he made famous in three films with director Sam Raimi.
"He sent me a lovely message through a mutual friend," Garfield said. "He gave me his support, and it meant a great deal, of course, because part of the reason I love and have continued to love this character was because of his portrayal. To step into those shoes is no mean feat. It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I'm thankful."
"The Amazing Spider-Man" is currently in production and is being shot entirely in 3-D. Directed by Marc Webb, the comic book film also stars Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. It will hit theaters on July 3, 2012.

Taylor Swift Gets Valentine's Day 'Enchanted' Cover From Owl City
Adam Young posts his own version of her song, which was rumored to be about him.

Taylor Swift famously writes songs about the guys in her life. And while she doesn't always say specifically who those songs are about, it seems one of the subjects of her melodic affections, Owl City's Adam Young, has figured out that he's the guy behind the Speak Now track "Enchanted." (Swift hinted to Yahoo! Music last year that the song might have been about him.)
"The track is absolutely gorgeous and I'm so tremendously honored that Taylor would write such an elegant song and thereby offer a gracious nod in my direction. Needless to say, I was lost for words and utterly smitten. I couldn't stop smiling," he wrote Monday (February 14) on his website. "I figured such an eloquent gesture should be reciprocated by the most polite, heartfelt and respectful response I could possibly muster. It's no secret that I'm a bit shy, so naturally music was the most articulate way of attempting such a sincere endeavor. How does one respond to such a personal outpouring of emotion and sentiment? I tossed and turned over that one."
As a gesture fitting for a day like Valentine's Day, Young wrote a response to Swift's song. "They say 'timing is everything' and that brings us to now. Today is Valentine's Day," he said. "And thus, here is my reply..."
On the synthy ballad, he sings to the star, "I was never in love with someone else/ I never had somebody waiting on me/ 'Cause you were all of my dreams come true/ And I just wish you knew/ Taylor, I was so in love with you."
He went on to post a photo of himself with the star. The pair stand smiling, hugging one another in the photo. "Everything about you is beautiful. You're an immensely charming girl with a wonderful heart and more grace and elegance than I know how to describe. You are a true princess from a dreamy fairy tale; a modern Cinderella," he goes on to say in the blog post. "I'm terribly sorry it's taken me such a long time to reply but I figured Valentine's Day was the perfect time to write this note to you and simply say... I was enchanted to meet you too."

Justin Bieber Tells Guys: 'Take Your Girl' To See 'Never Say Never'
'Even if you don't like my music or anything, just go,' pop star advises.

There's no denying that Justin Bieber has a mostly female fanbase, so there are probably swarms of teen girls cleaning off their purple 3-D glasses to check out "Never Say Never" this weekend. For those guys who think they have too much testosterone flowing through their veins to check out the film, the Biebs has a message for you.
"If I could say anything [to guys who think the movie is only for girls], I would say, like, just give it a chance," he told MTV News. "It's just a good movie. It has a good story line."
OK, so what if you're not into Bieber's music and you're a guy? "Even if you don't like my music or anything, just go," he advised. "And take your girl."
One guy who saw an advance screening, Jay Sean, admits that the movie does live up to the hype. "I really enjoyed the film, because it gave a really deep insight in the things that perhaps the fans don't see like when [Justin's] so exhausted, like when his voice goes out," he told MTV News. "You know, there's so many people around you trying to hold you down and keep you normal, those are the things that I'm really glad that a film showed those parts."
Jay went on to add that he went in to the movie not knowing what was in store. "I didn't know what to expect, whether he was going to be acting or whether it was going to be something else. It was so real, and I love the fact that it showed what it takes to be a superstar," he said. "I hope the kids took that message home."
The 3-D movie includes interviews from some of the people closest to Bieber, including his family, friends and crew. It also features cameos from Miley Cyrus, Usher and Ludacris, to name a few, who were filmed during his concert performances at Madison Square Garden last year.

BABY MAMA FOOLERY! Rapper J-Kwon Jailed For Child Support & Child Wasn't His!
Last year, rapper J-Kwon known for his 2004 smash hit "Tipsy," had the media in a frenzy when he went missing and no one could find him. The St. Louis rapper later resurfaced and he is now speaking out about his disappearance last March. Apparently, he was locked up for failure to pay child support. Read on to find out what really happened...
J-Kwon, real name Jerrell Jones, called St Louis radio station 89.9 FM "The People's Station" to confirm that he had been making child support payments of $2,500 a month for seven years for a child he found out wasn't his.
“I blame my absence from the game on this situation. Just as I was getting my first million dollar check a girl came to me and said she was pregnant…I bought her a house cause she's from the hood too, I let her stay at the house. I guess while I'm on tour she's taking paper work from the courts and disposing of them…The payment ended up being $2,500 a month…This kid looked like someone else, the test results came back in 24 hours and I am not the father…I don't feel any better or any worse about the situation, I'm just happy to have my life back.”
SMDH! He also said that he plans on starting a foundation that will help other men in similar predicaments so they won't get tricked and also end up in jail .
"I'm gonna start a foundation just for that, that's crazy that the law helps someone scheme you for this long. A) You're young. B) Your successful and C) They don't want you with it no way."
Damn homie. People really need to learn their rights. Isn't there a law or requirement to establish paternity before child support payments start. Either way. Shame on that chick for scheming like that.

Beyonce Working With Kanye West Producer S1
'Power' producer tweets he's 'finishing up some monsters' after week in the studio with B.
By James Montgomery
Beyoncé's already taken inspiration from the likes of Michael Jackson and Lauryn Hill, hit the studio with a list of producers that includes Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin, and now, she's hoping to capture the surge of Kanye West's "Power."
B — who's already hard at work on the follow-up to her massive I Am ... Sasha Fierce album — just wrapped a week in the studio with producer S1, the man who co-produced "Power" and has logged time with the likes of Ghostface Killah and Erykah Badu.
S1 broke the news via his Twitter account and also posted a photo of himself and B over on his official site. And from the sound of things, the sessions, which took place in New York City, were definitely eventful.
"A couple of meetings then back in the lab with Beyonce today," he wrote in one tweet. "Excited to see what we're gonna create today after last night's session.
"Not going to bed anytime soon. Beyonce got us in here working and I'm loving every bit of it," he wrote in another post. "Finishing up some monsters ... everything is sounding really great and big!"
There's still not much information about Beyoncé's new album, though in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" last year, she said that, this time out, she's aiming to "make [her] own genre of music." In a follow-up interview with MTV News, she clarified that statement, explaining that she's "mixing every type of genre that I love" on the new album, and added, "I'm not in a box. It's not R&B. It's not typically pop. It's not rock. It's just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music."
What do you think S1's work with Beyoncé will sound like? Tell us in the comments!

Dimmu Borgir Release Live DVD; Plus Led Zeppelin, Brujeria, & More News That Rules, In Metal File
'It shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums,' guitarist says.
By Chris Harris

On October 14, Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said.
"It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told Metal File last week, after dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically."
Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with Moonspell, Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP.
"It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f--_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f--- is this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be."
Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled In Sorte Diaboli. "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring.
"I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation."
While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings.
"And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula."
Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake.
"We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it — we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that."
The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.
The rest of the week's metal news:
Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, Winds of Plague, have announced ex-Azusa drummer Art Cruz has joined their ranks — he replaced Jeff Tenney. According to the band's blog, "Art has already added a new spark to the band and has provided us with a solid backbone that will allow us to continue our rampage stronger than ever." ...
What the world really needs is another Led Zeppelin box set, so, on November 4, Rhino Records will issue the Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica CD box set. For just $200, you'll get 1969's Led Zeppelin, 1969's Led Zeppelin II, 1970's Led Zeppelin III, 1971's Led Zeppelin IV, 1973's Houses of the Holy, 1975's Physical Graffiti, 1976's Presence, 1976's The Song Remains the Same, 1979's In Through the Out Door and 1982's Coda, as mini-LP replicas, with artwork from the original U.K. LP sleeves. Now, you know what you can get your dad for Christmas. ...
Former Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach and current Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz have teamed up for a new project they're calling Times of Grace, and they've already started working on material for their debut album. According to Leach, "We have two songs to go and we will be finished with all of the vocals. Adam has taken lead vocals in three songs as of yet and he is doing a great job. We also worked on a track yesterday that is so epic — we trade vocals and do two different melodies at the same time. This album went from a melodic metal album to an epic mix of metal/rock/pop/shoegaze and punk. So all of your metal expectations will be incorrect — we are pushing genre boundaries." To quote "Meet the Parents," we'll look forward to that, Greg. ...
The Funeral Pyre and Early Graves will be hitting the road together next month, starting November 7 in South Lake Tahoe, California. Dates are booked through November 21 in Hollywood. ...
The latest incarnation of Brujeria, which features Carcass frontman Jeff Walker and Napalm Death's Shane Embury, have lined up several U.S. dates for this winter. The band will begin its brief trek November 28 in Denver, and wrap things up in Dallas on December 7. ... Demiricous will be touring with the Gates of Slumber starting November 9 in Denver, for a jaunt that's scheduled to run through December 6 in Indianapolis. ...
Nearly three years after Roadrunner Records' Roadrunner United concert, which took over the Nokia Theater in New York's Times Square, the label is now releasing footage from that special night as "Roadrunner United: The Concert." The DVD, which hits stores December 9, will boast two discs and 24 live tracks, including Life of Agony's "River Runs Red," King Diamond's "Abigail," Killswitch's "My Last Serenade," Type O Negative's "Black No. 1" and Sepultura's "Refuse/Resist." ...
According to Blabbermouth, Verrot, bassist for Swedish black-metal outfit Elimi, committed suicide on October 3. In a statement, the band said, "Verrot was a very good friend, brother, an excellent bass player/musician and an important part of Elimi; we respect his decision and hope he'll find his way with the dark gods of Chaos. Let your black flame be a part of what brings forth the day of wrath."

A Homemade New Year Board Game
Crafting Projects With Your Kids and What The Experts Say.
According to Lois Clark, a Certified Counselor at The Ohio State University, parents who engage in activities with their children see higher social functioning, better retention rates in their childrens learning capabilities, and a stronger ability to deal with the challenges that life brings as they begin to mature.
When parents involve themselves with their children in activities such as crafting projects, and other exclusive activities, the time spent together strengthens the bond between parent and child, which in turn benefits the childs social skills, self confidence, and fosters a stronger sense of well being within the child.
Not only does time spent with children pay handsome dividends in the sociological and behavioral skills arena, but a well thought out crafting project can also serve to instill an appreciation for the arts in all of its facets. Only at the Soul Train Awards could you have a tribute to R&B icons such as Anita Baker and Ronald Isley alongside a segment in which rap legend Doug E. Fresh attempts to teach CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer how to do the Dougie.
It was that kind of night at the 2010 Soul Train Awards, as rookies, veterans and legends came together in Atlanta for the second annual event — which was taped November 10 and aired Sunday night on BET. The show, hosted once again by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, featured a night of performances from some of the biggest names in soul and R&B.
Host Howard told MTV News that the show is meant to be an extension of the long-running and legendary '70s TV series that brought soul, disco, R&B and rap stars into viewers' living rooms. "It reminds me of the advancement black people have made over the years because 'Soul Train' really was the beginning of that Black Power movement when we could actually see ourselves — and to have an awards show based upon that 'Soul Train' — it's headed somewhere," Howard said. "We have a black president now. The country seems to be more tolerant towards the diversity inside of it so it seems like the train is moving well down the tracks."
The awards show marked the 40th anniversary of the classic music showcase hosted by Don Cornelius, and celebrated the careers of Baker and Isley, while handing out trophies to such contemporary stars as B.o.B (Song of the Year for "Nothing on You"), Melanie Fiona (Best New Artist), Eminem and Rihanna (Best Hip-Hop Song of the Year for "Love the Way You Lie"), Usher (Album of the Year for Raymond vs. Raymond) and Alicia Keys (Record of the Year for "Unthinkable [I'm Ready]" and Best Female R&B Soul Artist).
Though top winners such as Trey Songz, Usher, Ciara, Eminem and Rihanna were not in the house, Blitzer graciously agreed to accept Slim Shady's award for him, joking, "Who better to accept this award on behalf of Eminem ... I know he's thrilled."
Weaving through a series of skits involving magic tricks and jovial bickering by the hosts, the performance-heavy program delivered on talent. R. Kelly opened by teasing the crowd with his classic "Bump n' Grind," then diving into his new single "When a Woman Loves" — transforming the song from a slow jam into an all-out '50s rock-and-roll epic. Ne-Yo kept the show moving with a showcase of his singles from this year, including "Champagne Life" and "One in a Million."
The tribute to Baker featured an all-star cast, with artists like Chrisette Michele, Goapele, Lalah Hathaway, Dionne Farris, Kem, Tamia, Faith Evans and El DeBarge covering a medley of the singer's greatest hits. Baker told the crowd that the biggest honor of the night for her was that real musicians were performing live with an actual band. "It's amazing because you've got children behind you singing 'Rapture' — it's lovely," she said, adding, "Let's do it again!"
Ronald Isley, co-founder and lead singer of the Isley Brothers, also received a special homage that featured Jeffrey Osborne, Freddy Jackson, DeBarge, Tank, Eric Benet, Bilal and Peabo Bryson. Isley also came out to perform his own medley of hits and was joined onstage by Chanté Moore and R. Kelly for a rendition of "Contagious," their 2002 single that featured the Isleys. In addition, Cee Lo Green closed the show with a duet on the Isleys' classic 1959 hit, "Shout."
Among the event's other highlights was Cee Lo's performance of his smash "Forget You," which took place on a golden stage that resembled a cross between Kanye's Egyptian fusion and an OK Go video, and found the singer gliding down conveyor belts while belting his number.
Erykah Badu delivered a stripped-down version of her 2010 breakout "Window Seat" that featured the singer perched on the floor over a web of lights while appearing to orchestrate the vibrations of light flickers with her hands.
Soul singer Eric Benet performed "Sometimes a Cry" — a song that Lil Wayne cited as one of his favorites while in prison — bringing down the house with a soaring falsetto that bested his studio rendition of the track.
The evening's other performers included Bruno Mars, who sang his new hit "Grenade," and Jazmine Sullivan, who did a medley of "10 Seconds" and "Holding You Down (Goin' in Circles)."
